Not sure about the other suppliers. I remember Merritt at RF parts getting peeved when people started cutting their own deal with Japan and going around him. He still claimed the factory sent him the choice parts, and of course he was the only one with a really good way to test and grade the matched sets that were sold.

Here in central Illinois we had base amps caled "chestnuts" I think the buider was out of Danville Ill. His boxes were black (wire mesh cover) 3 switchs on/off,standby,and ssb. tthey also had 2 green lights and one yelow for the stand by switch.. they were all tube type boxes varing from 50 watts all the way to 500. Most worked great and would swing a ton for the money. Later Joe

How about Icom and Kenwood, like the TL922a?

It would be interesting to see a similar list with the ones that were clones, as many share the same everything but the name, and maybe a full list of models, like all of the tx stars from the modv to the viking32V and there was also a Maco Bruite II for example, but something like that list is a huge work in progress for sure. The boomers around here were also bumblebees and knockoff palomars. That's a great list.

As a teenager we all ran either FOX 200's, Killer Bee's, or Silver eagles. These were all small but that is what we could get our hands on. It was in the early 90's.

Once upon a time a little company named Motorola designed what we know as the "linear amplifier"...all these builders today have done is expand upon and added some of their own invention to the classic Motorola...that includes Sidewinder and his clones.

 LOL that's a pretty "short and sweet" version of it----hope you didn't wear your fingers out typing all that now did you? I did laugh at that "condensed version" there Sheriff Bart  Pretty deep stuff.

I guess the same could be said for the modern car?
foxhunter wrote:Once upon a time a little company named Karl Benz designed what we know as the "automobile".....now all these builders today have done is expand upon and added some of their own invention to the classic Benz....that includes Henry Ford and his clones". TaDaaa----That sums up the history of the car then pretty much!
To you and all the rest I've truly enjoyed reading what eveyone has contributed so far. I'll go back and edit the list to add to it. It would look like it's going to get very long if I add model numbers of each amp-maker in, especially when considering company/commercial manufacturers but will. At it's true also like DrDx was pointing out, there are only a few Amateur/Ham Radio makers listed there and they should be included as well. A final listing of every amplifier ever made is a bit daunting, but atleast what is there is a good start.

At some point there'll be a master list of all, then broken up bewteen CB (custom & commercial separated) & Amateur/Ham radio amplifiers.

My biggest question in regards to either recent or current custom amp builders is: How many amplifiers produced makes someone (in the eyes of the CB world) considered "an actual amp builder"? How many would you all say?

I appreciate everyone who's taken the time to write onto this thread so far and I'll thank everyone who has the kindness to additionally post anything more they would be willing to!

Fox,

Rather than 'actual amp builders' you should break it down into amp builders and amp designers.

I think a ratio of around 50:1 between builders and actual designers!

There's few people out there who can design an amp telling you how it all works.

 Foxhunter I thought I'd address the D/C linear progression from the 80's to the present. Of course there's also the A/C amplifier and the Muddy Waters, Pony Express, Blue Gill etc. persuasion too but I had a feeling that when the original poster of this thread asked the question he was referring to to pill amps LOL LOL LOL hence the abridged version. Now as far as someone with actual engineering experience that could provide empirical data as to circuit design and function Sidewinder, not Joe in N.C., or the guy that builds FatBoys, or Avalanch or any of those guys that fell off the branch's of Sidewinders tree are true engineers...they are merely "constructors"
peace... and Foxhunter, they should've built the Tucker

Any info on a little amp called the 100HL? All I know is that it was made by J&S CB radios in Southern California.

I wanted to post a list now that contains double the amount of information on linear amplifiers made in the recent past & currently. I tried to get as much possible accurate information and from more than one source. I tried to go to archived manuals and when possible went directly to the manufacturer websites & PDF's. It's taken painfully long hours to compile and I hope to add more as I get it----I know it's not yet complete.

Ham/Amateur manufacturers are denoted by a double ** asterisk. If anyone is suffering from insomnia or anything similar, try and point out errors or additions if you think of them. This is now the most complete listing of CB & Ham amplifiers anywhere on the web, found here on the CBRT Forum. Any suggestions please add model #'s if possible.

Smokinjo wrote:Here in central Illinois we had base amps caled "chestnuts" I think the buider was out of Danville Ill. His boxes were black (wire mesh cover) 3 switchs on/off,standby,and ssb. tthey also had 2 green lights and one yelow for the stand by switch.. they were all tube type boxes varing from 50 watts all the way to 500. Most worked great and would swing a ton for the money. Later Joe
I appreciate the input from your reply but I haven't found anything on any amps along the lines of Chestnuts by make or manufacturer. Can you be more specific or provide some links for reference?
1fastneonrt wrote:Any info on a little amp called the 100HL? All I know is that it was made by J&S CB radios in Southern California.
Haven't seen anything YET on J&S 100HL. I'll reply if & when I do for you. You have one? That's the only information on the exterior of the amplifier? What about on the inside? Tube or transitor? What type (#'s)?
drdx wrote:How about Icom and Kenwood, like the TL922a?
It would be interesting to see a similar list with the ones that were clones, as many share the same everything but the name, and maybe a full list of models, like all of the tx stars from the modv to the viking32V and there was also a Maco Bruite II for example, but something like that list is a huge work in progress for sure. The boomers around here were also bumblebees and knockoff palomars. That's a great list. --drdx
Thank you Dx and the list has been updated & modified to include more Amateur manufacturers. Pheww.....It's taking a while to do. Trying to get information from more than one source and am leery of forum references only, am trying to find more concrete sources. Check it out so far. Not done yet though there's more......
**NON-SPONSOR** wrote:ok so I wrote johnson then reread the first post. it said transistor... oh well, to my knowledge johnson never made transistor amps. correct me if im wrong.--**NON-SPONSOR**
That was funny about what the girls like----you know it. No, although I am trying hard to find people here who will give some background to the custom transistor based comp amps (who where what why----anything) I'm also trying to publish the biggest list of RF amplifiers for the public sector, both tubes & transistors included. I appreciate you pointing it out **NON-SPONSOR**.
Unit 148 wrote:Fox,
Rather than 'actual amp builders' you should break it down into amp builders and amp designers.
I think a ratio of around 50:1 between builders and actual designers!
There's few people out there who can design an amp telling you how it all works.
Phil Unit 148
London, England
Thanks there Unit 148 over in the UK we back here in the Eastern Colonies appreciate the idea there. That type of discernment to distinguish designers from builders will involve even more countless hours of researching. As Crusher agreed, you are right on-the-mark as far as those just "cookie cutter" producing amplifiers from existing designs. However they are manufacturers at a certain production level. I'm unsure how any radically newer designs will be introduced, as it seems many have come up "against the wall" for any novel approaches or designs. Unit 148, write more if & when you can as we always appreciate those overseas like yourself who may have familiararity and information on products not as well known on the North American continent. I've tried to include some produced in the UK like Alan UK, Heatherlite and Linear Amp UK LTD but as always there may be other makers or models other than what I have listed. Let me know will you? PS----thanks for the background on the Varmints I've saved it and will try and refer to it. Very useful.
Sheriff Bart wrote::lol: Foxhunter I thought I'd address the D/C linear progression from the 80's to the present.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY !!!!! from the unknown soldier in the keystone
Haha LOL we appreciate you over there in the Keystone there Mr Sheriff Bart. My Sister here was looking over my shoulder the other day and was asking me to ask you-----who that is pictured in your avatar? I can place his face and seems he was an actor in the 80's. Am I right and who is he? Where over in the Keystone are you? Are you anybody I know from the Philly area? I'm over here in South Jersey you know. Yeah I did find that history lesson funny as h@ll-----and yes they should've built the Tucker-----it was WAY ahead of it's time. It's a shame he got played like he did and squeezed out. Absolutley as you, Unit 148, Crusher & others were all saying there's a big difference between a designer and a producer. True that. I'm not real familiar with the Blue Gill and Avalanche that you mentioned, can you tell me anything about them or any useful links?
nightwawk wrote:i didn't see triple zero?
Nighthawk I can't find ANYTHING on "Triple Zero" (or "000") amps. Do you know anything about them at all? Makes or models? Any links or references? Anybody?
Crusher wrote: Audio Maker is one, Audio Illusions is another, Audio Box out of either Cinn. or Cleveland OH
Crusher Bulit? Hmmm. Custom amps I take it, and enough to list? Anything you can tell me on the Audio Illusions or Audio Box-----or ANY of them. Help, I need help.
North Texas Mudduck wrote:dont forget to add to the amplifier list:
Anacondo
Got it and thank you. Had to add a (.) period in the name to make it list here. Only found one base model for them and that's it. Any other Anacond.a amp models you know of? You've been at it for awhile----what other amp makers am I missing?

One member Linearone mentioned a "Bladerunner" making comp boxes long before NJ Dave was. Haven't found anything on those either.

***************************************************************************

Thanks to all so far and someone please continue to reply or fill-in what they might have personal knowledge of. Don't die taking your secrets to the grave !!!

I'm definitely trying to provide a reference list for not only for myself but for everyone. Keep in mind some of these a bit more obscure "regional" amp makers may not be very well known at all in other parts of the country-----so what you may be familiar with, others may not ever had heard of !

I'm also afraid of reading somewhere online of "Barbie & Ken Built" or "Mattel Made" or "Fisher Price Electronics" etc etc. You know how guys can be. The very nature of the Internet can lead to some very "misleading" information. As always I'm trying to be accurate and provide some good data but I'm human and it's possible to pass on some bad info.

And anymore........doing a search on ANY of the major search engines brings back so much useless irrelevant results, that it takes FOREVER sometimes to sift through it all to find one good source. So any help is always appreciated. Not only those quoted above but *thanks* EVERYONE who's contributed so far and those reading who would be kind enough to add-in.

thats because he was around before the internet and is not on the internet like everyone else is. Youd have to know a guy, who knows a guy who knows a guy.
I was lucky to meet a guy who knows a guy.

See where you added john boy- His amplifiers are sold under the name (Tennesee Walker)
Shop is called expert electronics
he builds ac and dc boxes
biggest dc he builds according to when i was in his shop about 8 months ago is a 16 pill. Fine looking amplifier for sure. And his ac boxes are top notch also.

You can add **Censored** amps to the list.
He build some fine boxes, I have one of his 8 pills. You can get just about anything your budget will allow.
I think he has a web site now. He is known as John Henry on the Bowl.

Anyone interested in or following this thread, I've added to the amplifier builders & manufacturer list quite a bit. Made many new entries by editing the last list I made but now it's pushed back in the thread so I'm reposting again. Just made some final entries here with Crusher Built Amps as it seems I neglected to list his line while compiling the initial listings. It's still a work in-progress so bear with and I always appreciate a new addition that has something to go on. Thanks all.

I added many makes & models by editing them in recently. 3 times now when I've worked on this the last week or two I lost connection to the server (or my provider--who knows) and lost everything that I had entered, causing me to have to try and go back and revisit everywhere I'd been online---what a real bummer and waste of time. Anyway.....

So far I haven't seen anything on "Lazy L" Grimace mentioned.

Or haven't seen "Biohazard" (AMPower was already listed) that Alien Abductor mentioned.

Junkie I did have WorldWide already listed, but didn't have "Stroker Amps" listed, thank you and I've added them. I wonder if they are built by 557---or built for 557, just to be sold via his website?

Any links and other suggestions, with something to go on especially, would be appreciated. Any other amp builders or amp makers that anyone knows of?

There are allot of really loud Tailgator amps down here in S GA and around N FL. Mostly big tube boxes from what I hear on the air. If you are in the area and running on 26 sooner or later you'll hear "Me and this Tailgator just got down!"

Foxhunter. I was reading about the ELENCO Long Ranger amp in the Trade Equipment Forum. Since I don't have the privilege to post a reply in that forum, I thought I'd respond here. If you click on the first picture to make it full size, you can see all the way at the bottom below the dials:

ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING COMPANY somethingBASH INDIANA. USA.

I gues they took the first 2 letters from each name to come up with ELENCO.

Just trying to help you out.

Well thank you and right after this I'll go back above and edit this new entry in. There is still an Elenco Electronics located in nearby Illinois that has been in business for over 30 years and it may be the same company once known as Elenco Engineering, not sure.
http://www.elenco.com/

I'm guessing that in the picture that is "Wabash Indiana" but can't be certain because of that darn fuse holder is blocking it! Hey DocRoc----thank you very much.

Anyone who would help me out like this I'd appreciate it

Got it Zinger827 and thank you. Some of the posts in the previous pages have amplifier makers that I still can't verify, anywhere. If anybody sees anything on them, please give a holler.

Blue Gill is a name I remember from the 70's. He built A/C and D/C amps. Don't really know if he still operates anymore. The actor is Cleavon Little, who has passed away, the pic is from the movie 'Blazin' Saddles' ... So let's see if I can respond without it getting deleted this time around...

Charger left davemade and started FatBoy

123 Left DaveMade and started xforce with Carl.

123 is now working with Charger at FatboyAmps

I will do some research on WorldWide amps, let me ask a couple people tonight on PalTalk, and I will get back with you.

I haven't heard the name blue gill in a few years and that was from a guy that builds Mousetrap amplifiers that used to run with 88. I think that name is older than OldMan and Muscleman. Worked on a few old man boxes. Worked on a 12 pill that I was impressed with.

Well please let me add my 2 cents worth on the name Blue Gill, yes , he is still alive, yes he is still building boxes, tube type,ac only though, no pills, he now goes by J B Stone, and he is still around the south side of chicago, I just seen him last year at a friends house, changing out a tube, and tuning, and then swinging right around 50 k out of my buddies surburban, the buddy's name was Baby Huey, he had a stroke last November, and past around mid December. Blue Gill, aka. J B Stone is still well and kickin,,,,,221

Foxhunter that is a very nice list. That must have taken a lot of time and dedication to compile it. Very good job sir.

But i am curious. What name begins with a "L" and is nasty so it got censored? I have been racking my brain and I can not figure out a censor worthy "L" word. Please let me know, even if it is just a PM, I am really curious.

thanks, 213

Maybe some of the guys here will chime-in on what they know about the history of these companies for those of us who aren't exactly sure. Because of the very nature of all this and with the FCC it's hard to separate fact-from-fiction. Anybody ??

I do know for a fact that the NJ DaveMade boxes are famous in these parts here in New Jersey and he still produces but not in large quantities. He's not interested in taking orders like the other "amp companies" and he is involved in legitimate electronic business activites.

I understand (ie "heard"--can't verify) that he now also holds a number of patents in legitimate broadcast electronics devices. A major local FM rock radio station studio here in nearby Philadelphia was supposedly done by him & his company and DaveMade labels are on much of the studio equipment. I've never been inside the studio, but it is commonly told around here.

Again, maybe some of the guys here will chime-in on what they know about the history of these companies (Dave Made / Fatboy / X-Force / WorldWide ++??) for those of us who aren't exactly sure. Perhaps I left out some of the other "main characters" in the amp maker story ? I thought Skullcraka may have been associated with the X-Force crew ? What about the Skywalker amps----any connection ? If there is a "family tree" of sorts with these guys, all coming from a common background ? Can anybody contribute here, because of the very nature of all this and with the FCC-----it's hard to separate fact-from-fiction.

Anybody ??
Sometime around the mid 1980's Dave started building competition amplifiers. Prior to that there was no such thing as a negative ground copper board competition amp. Dave saw the short coming of the amps that were out there (ie. no cooling system, poor ground to the board, cheap transformers etc.) and engineered a superior design.
So understand if it was not for Dave, and his designs there would be no such thing as a competition CB amp, and other gear.
Dave invented many things for the CB comp world. ( comp amps, adjustable voltage regulators, puck mounts, 5/8 transformers, the rod of god 1/2 wave mobile antenna, the keying repeater chip, digital wideband transmitter, and the list goes on and on up to and including some 2009 technology that im not at liberty to discuss !)

As for some of the people who worked for Dave, you were a little off.
Fatboy (Tony) used to key with Davemade amps. Fatboy had a dodge van that had an antenna system that radiated better out of the rear than the front, that he used to back up to the line at keydowns. Fatboy blew up alot of boxes and at the time Dave was swamped with work, so being tired of waiting for repair Fatboy started repairing his own amps, and a few years later Fatboy was born. Fatboy never worked for Dave.

123 worked for Dave as a DC builder. Sometime around 1996-1997 Dave designed the wrap around style cabinet for amplifiers. 123 stole the wrap around cabinet design, and skipped town and moved to Chicago and started Xforce with Carl being the money man backing it. Now hes up to his old tricks at the Fatboy shop.

Around 1998-1999 there was a big CB break in Chicago. Xforce was keying boxes in every class to try to get their new name out there. Dave sent a couple of his solders to Chicago. (Concrete Man and Rock N Roll) Concrete ended up whipping the Xforce team in every class. Just a little reminder of who the real techs were.

Joe of Davemade NC learned to build from Dave and the Team NJ boys. NC Davemade is the best and closet copy to the originals. Superior to Fatboy and Xforce. 13va who was a fierce competitor on the keydown scene for many years had alot of success running Davemade NC boxes.

Stickman of No Name is a friend of team Davemade NJ, and has bought some parts etc. from Dave over the years.

Blackcat also made a 440 pretty rare and hard to find. BLJ also made 600, 1000 and 2000, the 2000 was 220vac only. Demco also made a DPA-65 two piece modulator/amp. RF deck/amp had a single 6146 tube, control head/modulator looked like a normal Demco modulator with an 'eye tube' Very nice piece and extremely rare. Digital Sport systems made a couple other amps. I believe a 100 and 200. Eagle also made a 500. Maco + Duster, Super 75, Brute, Mini Brute, 500 and kw. Mohawk + 10, 10a and 10b. Penetrator +hb150. Thats from the top of my head. I may pull out my schematics later. Peace.

Also Swinger 707 which I'm playing with now and the reason I found this site. Swinger also made other amps, but I'm not sure of the model numbers.

another is Minuteman amps. I believe where made by Wawasee aka Black Cat, used 4cx250b tubes. Pretty sure they had a 4 and 6 tuber, not sure about a 2 tuber. Very nice to look at, looked like a stereo component. However, not well made (like most Wawasee), used very high plate voltage and was said to blow the tubes right out their sockets.
Do any old timers remember a Black Cat JB-2000 that used all sweep tubes, before they started using 3-500z's?
and the million dollar question is: does anyone remember Black Cat / Wawasee making a 2 piece Modulator box where the mod box hooked to the microphone?

I'm glad to see a number of guys still adding to this thread. Truthfully I haven't viewed this thread again in-depth for quite some time now, other than making a post correction on an edited-out amplifier maker that was asked about by someone above.

I have a whole list here on my desk of additional amplifier makes and models that can actually be verified were made by whom and/or what company, I've been working on it in-between for a couple months now. Here's another big part of it too-----being able to confirm the makers and various models. In effect, I don't want to read somewhere that I left out "Ganja Man Amps" or similar type deal, that can't be found or confirmed somewhere online in a database or for sale etc or with actual photos. I've tried to document as many CB amps as possible (and boy there were a lot at one time) as well as the HF Amateur amps (not getting too far into VHF/UHF or other distant areas) that could be of use.

Another thing that I have to add-in on and also question is some of the background of the core group of custom amp builders, the original first wave or two that started the comp scene and many of which are still in the game in one form or another today. I've heard numerous (although quite different) versions of the DaveMade Fatboy XForce Joker etc etc amps. It almost seems "Urban Legend" who really did what and who was with who and who left who, everyone I talk to locally has different takes on this early chapter and I'd like to throw some things out there and see if some of you will second the motion on what sounds right or not.

It's 12Am Christmas Eve right now and I need to get into the other room away from the PC but I'll be getting a post together in the next couple days for this thread. I really thank everyone who has and is still willing to add to this subject and help "clear some of the air" surrounding the subject and topic. Thanks to everyone for keeping this thread interesting for sure.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE

WOW....you guys are impressive with all the knowedge you have about all these amps. I think it would be interesting to rate these amps...say the top 15-10 amps manufactures. I guess amps are like people in a way...some amps are all talk while others could walk the talk. Thanks for the info as it is really educational.
