GE Superbase tuning

#387018

Post by Turk182 »

Couldn't find info on Google, just need to know how to tune down my rig to 2W max so as not to fry my NIB KL-405. Specs says it handles up to 10w AM/20W SSB. Rather push it with too little than too much. Any good advice is appreciated in advance.

On the GE SuperBase ( 3-5875A), the AM power potentiometer is VR10 (could be RV10 depending on the board), you shouldn't have to mess with the SSB ALC but in case the pot is VR20 (RV20 same). Don't go below 2w DK on AM.

Many thanks, you saved me lots of digging. Found the schematic for the GE on CBtricks.com, just didn't know exactly which pot to look for. Wish there was a good CB shop here in SW FL, but as we all know, they're getting tougher to find these days. They could put it on an oscilloscope and fine tune it. I'm far from a skilled tech, but I realize there's more involved than just turning down the power. With a Silver Eagle on it, I might want to keep the wattage and modulation a little lighter than too heavy. Always got "good, clean" signal reports anyway during skip running barefoot. 73's.

The modulation pot is VR9, look to make sure C71 is still there and connected, if not I would replace it.

Sorry it's taken me this long to get to this project(just survived major hurricane), but tried turning RV 10 in both directions(with non-conductive driver) with no change in watt output on either meter("TX Power" on radio or meter on my MFJ-941D tuner). Now what?

Update: RV 10 is functional. Meters on both units inaccurate. Hooked up MFJ-868B watt meter and measured 2-1/2 w DK. Should be good 2 go.
