FWIW, the TRC-427 is the same chassis as the Cobra 25 GTL.

I run one in my Jeep, and I love it. With a flat SWR I get 6W DK and 22-25W swing PEP, just by turning up modulation and dead key. I get great reports on clarity and signal. Those radios have that crappy 5 pin din type mic plug so I replaced that one with the 4 pin thumb screw type and wired up an RK56 to match. If you're running the stock mic, that could be where your muffled sound is coming from. I also installed an astatic echo board and put the controls in place of that POINTLESS tone knob. They will flat out talk with a few simple mods that have already been listed earlier, not to mention that cool **Censored** retro look. Good luck!

Heres more mods on it
1.Change R44(6.8 Ohm to a 3.9 Ohm
2.Change R61 (1 Ohm) to a .47 Ohm
3. Re-tune L16,L15.L12 for max forward power
