Hey...

Most amps/radios/equipment is only worth what another person wants to pay for it.

With the market flooded with this type of equipment...it would be wise to keep looking.

And with the cost of the 8950 tubes....

Exactly what Bombero said. There is a bunch that makes the rounds on "that auction" site. The "Skipper" is one of the better tube amps, yes the 8950 tubes are extremely expensive. I would not buy one online unless expecting to use it for parts but if local and complete with the transformer I would take a look at it, you can always say "no"

This one is in top shape (definitely for someone that wants to use it to talk)

Has been in a styrofoam box for years

Its clean, you can eat off it

Not sure which tubes are in it -- I know either of the tubes 6lf6 or 89.... are expensive

Price is what I need to know

thanks :basketball:

Sitting doesn't do them any favors but if it helps there was a clean working one near me for $125 that was on craigslist forever, not sure if it ever sold.

Yep, drdx would know, he does keep track of things. In extremely good condition and working I would go 150. Those higher prices on that auction are op's that have never had one (newbie's) and don't know what they are getting into. I like restoring old equipment back to working condition but the cost of tubes and extinct matched sets have stopped it completely.

a Palomar Skipper 300 was my first amp back in the 80s and I loved it. Today, the wattage doesnt hold up to whats going on with the power on the cb radio. I still love a Palomar but realize its not going to give me the output I may need but with local talking I can see the plus.

I see these amps move pretty fast online auctions. I know there is still a market for them.

I am not big on purchasing the tubes. I would love a modulator or a transistor 200 watt for local talking or even a radio that put out 100 watts or so. I do believe in purchasing items that I can later re-sell with no problem.

thanks all for your responses

I love those old Skipper 300 tube boxes.
I don't know what people are talking about expensive tubes, have you checked the price of 2sc2879's lately?
The tubes plug in and out, with the transistors you have to mess with the soldering in and out along with the
other components that blow up when the transistors go bad.
I convert the Skipper and other tube amp to less expensive ($10.00 each) tubes and run them like they were stolen!
When I am in there I replace the other major problem area, the HV supply, two caps and 4 diodes, another $10.00.
So, for $50 less than the price of one new Toshiba 2879 I have a 500 watt pep base box with new tubes and rebuilt power supply.
Man, that's expensive!!
I didn't mention selling the good 8950 tubes for $40 each...............................................
