You really shouldn't have to tune it but if you find that you need to just pick a channel and turn the rings together until you get the lowest SWR.

Try them at the top first and if that isn't suitable then move them to the bottom.

1.7 on channel 1 , 1.9 on channel 20 , 2.0 on channel 40 . Thats with the rings all the way up , all the way down had the swr on 40 at 3.0 . May wind up having to cut some off the steel whip thats on top.

With the results that you have I think you need to try a different location for that 99. :icon_e_surprised:

I just bought one and spent yesterday afternoon adjusting the tuning. Mounted in a temporary location with the base 15' off the ground fed with 20' RG-58, I moved the rings around quite a bit and settled with them set between 6 and 7 threads showing from the top. I was not able to get the VSWR down as low as I'd have liked, but it may be a bit different in it's permanent position anyway. This seems to be a good compromise setting though I''ll have to trim it some to get it where I'd like on 10 meters. Looking at my notes, here what I have with it set here:

VSWR 1- 1.3
40- 1.6

50 Ohms at 26.664

2:1 VSWR bandwidth: 21.152 - 27.694.

Adjusting them all the way to the top was considerably worse (1.7-1.8 across all 40 channels), and going lower than 7 turns showing was about the same on 27 MHz.

15-10 meters would be nice to have, but this antenna (at least at the test location) just isn't going to do that. I figure 15/12/11 isn't bad so I'll leave it at this for now.

Well it turns out the tuning was quite a bit different when it was raised to 35' and fed with 100' of RG213. The resonant point was nearly 1 MHz lower. I just cranked the rings up 3 turns and raised it back up and the VSWR is below 1.4:1 across the entire CB band. The 2:1 point us now around 21.385, so I've lost part of 15 without a tuner, but I now have below 2:1 up to 28.185, so there is that.

So it looks to me as though the ring adjustment made a more noticeable difference at the greater height, as well as the resonant frequency being lower than at 15 feet.

Interesting.

and why is there a steel whip on top
im now guessing someone just screwed it on top without cutting it down to tune in?
