70's Starduster antenna dimensions

Post by sf327 » Sunday, 19 April 2009, 17:26 PM

Hi there all-

Does anyone have a working one of these they could measure? I mean put it up, tune it for the normal CB band and then measure it for me? Or maybe a manual for it?

I got one that was missing the ground plane rods so I made some from aluminum rods and tubing. its missing the struts to hold the radials out from the mounting pole, but the radials only droop slightly and wave in the wind. One of the top hat radials (is that what there called?") fell out since its been mounted on the roof, but it didn't change the SWR. Seems to get out and receive quite well as it is, but of course, I want to tweak it to perfection :-)

I'd like to know the -
length above the hub
length of the radials from the hub (either total or once screwed into the hub)
height of the top hat from the hub.
if the length of mounting pipe that screws into the hub makes any difference

When I tuned this thing it seemed like I made the vertical and radials long enough to get good channel one swr, then moved the top hat to peak channel 40.. something like that..think I have the radials at about 104" now.

thanks and 73's sf327

The starduster was manufactured and sold as a 1/4 wave ground plane antenna. Both the driven element and ground plane radials are a 1/4 wave at the
lowest operating frequency.

Hey thanks guys. That will help alot.
Today in the high winds 2 of the top hat radials fell off, and the SWR improved to 1.2 across the band. That suggests to me It's not tuned quite right. Well, it will have to wait till I get back home about a month from now. Gotta go drive a truck and make money..

Thanks again-
