Nothin but local For almost a year

Post by banjo315 »

I have a dx66v Wilson 1000 with the 66" whip rm Italy 200p with 1.5 on 1 and about the same on 40! Still the farthest contact I have gotten is 25 miles away and then finaly I got this dude that I hear over 2 states but he was only a mile from me all this time. What gives?

Is there a place to check the ionosphere? Possibly an Iphone app. The solar monitor always says bad conditions.

If your set up is working well on the local stuff, sooner or later you'll catch some DX. Much of the time it's about being in the right place at the right time. Too bad you don't have sideband, it's a bit easier to snag on some DX with it. But don't sweat it, it WILL happen if you keep trying.

I'll trade you DX for local.. I'm having a hard time talking to the biggest station out here lately when skip is rolling... Flip to a non local channel, get name called every other time. It'd be fun if it wasn't just Georgia and Texas with the same people... (and that one Hawaiian guy)..

I've checked the skip condition meters online when it's booming. It wasn't very helpful and still said 'poor' on the conditions... Tends to come around weather changes lately... When the rain starts or stops or a cold front comes in.

Based on how it's been out here, I bet your 'skip' area is new mexico/arizona and the middle of the atlantic ocean.. (3,000 miles, SE/SW ~15 degrees.)

I get California, Kentuckey, and Spanish from Old Mexico and usually the power stations don't hearn me locally and none of the long distance stations ever hear me. I get the truckers though on the highway too. I only got DJ 13 here in Pittsburgh and the truckers hear me.

I would venture to gues they are blocking the low power and barefoot stations with their squelch.

Today was terrible. Everyone sounded far off, no contact on any freq. Heavy heavy rain.

I wonder if Ill get out better when I run the power to my amp on a separate hot wire from my radio cuz right now it's on the same line.

From a certain spot on a hill I get two way contact about 25 miles away. Once on the Atlantic coast I got a whorehouse in Ohio and in the mountains in NH I got two way from Nova Scotia but nothin else over 20 miles away.

Where do you get you condition reports? I wish there was an iPhone app or I would join Twitter if someone would tweet it.

2010 Nov 30 2200 UTC
Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be very low with a chance for C-class activity from Region 1130 (N12W27).

2010 Nov 30 2200 UTC
Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to be mostly quiet for days one and two (01-02 Dec) as the effects from a coronal hole high-speed stream continue to subside. Quiet to unsettled conditions with a slight chance for isolated active periods are expected on day three (03 Dec) due to possible effects from a CME associated with the disappearing filament observed early on 29 November.
2010 Nov 30 2200 UTC
Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 29/2100Z to 30/2100Z: Solar activity was very low during the past 24 hours. A CME from the NE quadrant was observed in SDO/AIA images at approximately 30/1830 UTC. Further analysis is required to determine if the CME will be geoeffective.

2010 Nov 30 2200 UTC
Geophysical Activity Summary 29/2100Z to 30/2100Z: The geomagnetic field was quiet during the past 24 hours.

When you want to check for conditions, just put it on channel 6. If there are any, chances are you'll hear it there first. If you can talk 35 miles locally your setup is fine.
