I live right next to lake michigan, sometimes I will take my van supplied with a galaxy 959 with a eagle 250 and wilson 5000, drive by the lake, then farther away. I do agree a big body of water helps out big time. I noticed the difference right away.

27.025 channel 6, lol. when you ad 10,000 watts to a radio, that I think on the most part isn't skip, but yeah channel 6 is alwaysblowing my doors away. they are 2,000 miiles away and bleeding on every channel I have pratically.

The biggest amplifier in the world wont get you more than a couple/few hundred miles without skywave propagation.

Edit: at 27 MHz

You're best bet is when skip first starts to roll, before the big strappers lock down the channels. Listen for the strongest stations you can hear, because chances are that propagation is getting into the area where they are the best. If a station is booming into your radio, that's your best chance to boom right back, there are no gaurantees, but give it a shot. You'll be thrilled when you make your first dx contact. It doesn't always take big power, sometimes mother nature will get the job done just fine.

become the CB guru,, think like a CB, become one with the CB,,,, when you get to that point, open up the radio and tweek on the receive a bit,,you want to hear all that noise ,,, you will have an audio indicator of the ionsphere... then, when you hear tommy that crazy lazy jamacian flapping on the mic,,, chime in and see if you get a come-back,,,, if not,, maybe you gotta go back to school on the concept of CBing,, understanding it so well that you ride the airwaves just like you ride a horse or rollercoaster, tweaking a sliding clarifier,,,, you have to get RESONATION,,, (all components at optimum ,,, so that if a cat rubs the couch next door, you hear it on your reciever)get a longwire antenna,
OK , i am exaggerating but only a little. ,
find a buddy that you can sit in on during one of his DX sessions,,, saterday mid-late morning is always good,
