Montgomery Ward Model 702

Post by Sambo747 » Monday, 28 March 2011, 18:51 PM

Saw one of these the other day and really dig the radio and really want to purchase it. Can anyone tell me some pro's and con's on this radio. Ive heard they made it for KMart years ago. But It just looks like a real neat radio and its also very clean and powers up great and works great. but I just want some info on this radio if anyone has ever been around one or used one.

Thanks

I've never heard of a Kmart connection. It was made by one of the OEM manufactures, likely Cybernet of Japan, for Montgomery Ward Department Stores. Kmart had a few radios made for them by one or more OEM manufactures as they show up on PLL lists but I can't say I've ever saw any of Kmart branded radios in real life. Back to the 702, we sold a few used ones at our little shop back in the 1990's and I remember it being a fairly impressive standard AM base. They're a good looking vintage radio in IMHO as well. It uses the M58473P PLL chip which I don't know much about.

I plan to add one of them to my collection sometime in the future. If the one you're considering is working, and in good condition, $60 or less would be reasonable. If it's really nice I would be willing to spend a bit more personally. They tend to bring that or at times a bit more on eBay. I think their large signal meter and blue LED clock might be a real draw for them on eBay.

Not sure if I offered any helpful information or not as that's about all I can remember about them.

All I found for it was basic tune up information.

Wards GEN-702A: <L208, L209, L210, 211, VR206>

I wouldn't do any drastic mods to that radio as it's an older uncommon radio. Major mods will kill it's value.

I've got three old Ward's mobile CB's... a 680, 719, and 730... and they are some of my favorite radios. Excellent receive and very well filtered. I think they operate better than new in the box Cobra 29's. Don't even need to run the squelch most of the time since the noise level is so quiet.
