Base Linear Tube type or Pill type

Post by DOG MAN » Friday, 22 December 2006, 11:51 AM

Now just what will the difference be between a tube type or a pill type amp?

I am thinking about the way they sound on the other end. Always had the tube type.

I suppose is depends on a few things, typically tube amps are designed more linear than transistors and with properly filtered RF output can be said to run "cleaner"
Transistors tend to give off more harmonically at the output so they jump around the spectrum more..
With that said it boils down to the design. A good pill designed amp with decent filtering will do better than a tube amp with bad filtering.

I always liked the tubes amps better, at least till it was time to buy tubes ('specially these days!). My tech in the old days always said the tube amps were cleaner as Mr. Heat already said, although back then, there really weren't many people using transistor amps except for mobiles applications. I used to run a Firebird 500 and an SB220 into various quads, yagis, and even the A99 with no filters and got no complaints from any of the close by neighbors, so I guess my tech was right. Just my $.02 worth.

I really like tube radios and tube amps, but thats just me, they seem to talk with a clean harm sound, but I'm sure some will think its nuts

I have both as well. I really like the tube amps too...and I can remember the guy I bought mine from and why I bought it. The mod it produced was awesome loud...but crisp & clean (when properly tuned).

However, I've heard some class AB amps that do a very nice job (especially on SSB) as well. Alot of the time the radio driving the amp is what makes the difference on both IMO.

Overall though tube amps have my vote.

Just my $.02

I like tube amps more than transistorized amps. From my experience it seems that the overall modulation is better on tubes, plus it gives you that unique Crisp, Fresh, LOUD Audio.

You just need to get an amp that uses reasonably priced tubes. I had an amp a long time ago that used 3-500Z's, which are extremely expensive, and I had it changed over to Russian tubes which I got for about $10 apiece from a Soviet Union Surplus.

Thanks

It all depends on how much power you want to run. My thinking is anything over 1500watts is more efficiently served by tubes. However these 50volt pills seems to have advantages over tubes at this 1kw - 2kw range.

Another thing is this talk about harmonics. An amplifier running at 27MHz is gonna put out harmonics at 54 and 81Mhz, etc.. certainly not AUDIBLE. But, considering we're runing AM, the gain compression of the amplifier certainly could impact the sound.

i ran across this pic the other day, his vote seems to be for tubes:

Well I bought a 200-X Palomar seems to get out great with nice mod. :D and looks like new. The meter does not work. Can the meters be fixed or can a replacement be found for it?
