Messenger M250 SSB Delay Question

#387445

Post by Firebreather »

I have an older Messenger AB1 biased amplifier that I recently obtained. It's the older version without the SSB switch. It does have a slight delay when being used on SSB (which is the only mode I want to use it on), and sounds super clean. I would like to increase the SSB delay but am unsure how to add a capacitor to do this on this particular amp. Is anyone familiar with these old Messenger amps that could possibly provide some insight into this? Thank in advance.

Open up the amp and follow the trace from the radio jack (SO239 connector), you are looking for a cap should be labelled C-4, it is a 10uF/25V Electrolytic Capacitor, replace it, chances are it is bad and if you still get chatter on SSB then up the value 22uF.

That amp was one of the best back in the day, excellent quality and great output as long as you don't overdrive it which with today's radios it is easy to do. If you want you could add a switch to the negative side of that cap to switch it out of delay when using it on AM.

I love the Messenger amps. Had one back in the day but let it go at some point. Glad to have found another one for sure. I'll only be using it for SSB work right now, but the switch idea is a good one for future considerations. I'll probably add a toggle switch to the back panel for this purpose. Again, thanks for the help!
