Connection issue with SuperStar 500

#386686

Post by Badge19 »

Good Morning,
I recently acquired a SuperStar 500 base station power supply/amplifier. The unit powers up, switches and led lights ok, fan runs fine. However when I attempt to attach the jumper from radio to amp the signal drops out when I secure the PL259 connector. Any ideas..??? Thanks in advance.

I believe on that PS/amp the top connector is the for the trasmitter and the bottom is for the antenna, but then it is a old amp, someone may have switched them during a repair. If that isn't the case check the jumper or use a barrel connector and see if it happens without the amp inline, could be a bad jumper, that happens too.

Thanks Greg! Issue doesn't seem to be the jumper cable. I first tried it using the jumper I'm currently using on another amp, which is working fine. But to be sure I tried (2) other jumpers, same issue.

With the amp connected andin the "off" position it should be in feed thru mode, I'd check the center pin of the connectors with a multimeter. Any other testing you will need a 50Ω dummy load.

Following up on this post....had the unit looked at and found the pre-amp had failed; went ahead and had it disabled, now working like a champ..!

That was probably from the previous owner hooking the coax up wrong, I'm guessing he just took the relay out of line, if I remember correctly those receive pre-amp could be switched independently from the amp itself. Glad to hear it's working.
