Midnight Special 250

Post by SwampHog » Wednesday, 01 October 2008, 21:35 PM

I was checkin out that cbradiomagazine website was the review on the Midnight Special 250 caught my eye. Looks really cleanly built and tiny! Few questions, is this amp only made for SSB or can it be used for normal 1-40 CB use? Xforce site says export use only, is that just so they can legally sell them? I sold my other 2pill planning on going bigger but then decided not to spend the money, so im in the market for a 2 pill again, and at 119$ the midnight special looks nice.
Heres how small the **Censored** is, which is a plus I dont have extra room or want something that will stick out.

That amp is made for AM use. The site says it has an automatic SSB delay if you want to use sideband, as well. "Export" is for legal reasons just as you have stated. Should be able to use it just like your previous amp. Those are neat lookin'...several locals have used Midnight Specials before. No complaints with quality that I know of. I think they're fairly sound little boxes.

That I couldn't tell ya. I've never heard complaints from any of the locals about it...they just keep talkin' like nothings wrong, if it does get hot!

Haha, yea I hear a 2pill wont get super hot in the first place but im not sure. Such a small enclosure though those heat sinks are pretty large.

I doubt you'll have a problem, especially if you mount it upside down or put a little fan on it....or both

I read the same report and will probably order one myself. I was impressed with the way it looked to be put together, and the size makes it usable about anywhere. I had one of those little Italian amps I used for quite a while and then gave it to my son to put in his Jeep. Not much bigger than two decks of cards. It did the job and cost less than $70.00. The Midnight Special may just be my replacement.

Hay SwampHog,

Be sure to let us know how it works out. May be in the market my self for a nice little one like that.

I wonder why they don't put the heatsinks on the bottom? Wouldn't they work better on top?

I think they put the heatsinks where the transistors are located. Somebody needs to just start printing the name upside down!

Anyone have any results with the Midnight Specials yet? I can't decide between the 4 pill, or a World Wide or Fatboy 1x2.

They don't make them any more. I think I already posted that. But good luck in your search for some inventory that hasn't sold yet. I talk to these people about every morning and they don't know who is sitting on unsold merchandise either. 8)

Out of curiousity I tried to order a 250 off their website it appears it will let you order one as I got to the payment stage before I cancelled, it came to $135 and change with UPS shipping. If they don't have any stock you would think they would update their site.

They should sell for $150.00 and around $14.00 shipping and handling Swamp Hog. Since you bought a Brimstone in the past, you can have one for $125.00. 8)

Just got off the phone with X-Force and they are still making the amp FOR SURE. I asked if they were and I got a funny pause and she was like, uh yeah. LOL

I might be getting a 500. :)

500 likes 3-4 watt DK

700 likes 2watt or so DK because of the built in driver. Also no more than 30 watt swing.

Oh and ProTech that Comet I had turned out to be going bad or something. Thats why in the Market for a new one. :)

any idea if a midnight 250 would work paired up with my 88? i figure i would have to run on low power, but wasnt sure if low power was still to much dead key for the 250 amp. so how much more wattage will the 250 actually give you?

With a proper match you will have 250 watts PEP with your 88. That is the very minomum you should see. Most of the time our customers do that up to 300 watts PEP. 8)

If you want to look at another Small Amp and cost, take a look at the Bullet Proof Amp's I have the 250 and I am getting great reports on the crisp sound on both Am and SSB and I do prefer the SSB Delay Sys. over the Auto Switching. I believe Protech has some for sale.

Go with a Fat Boy 300 that Redman sells better Customer support and its only $130.00 shipped. Will do as much or better than the Midnight Special.Carl the owner of x-force is to busy driving for UPS to worry about his product or give support when their is a problem, the woman who answers the phone is his wife and when a problem comes around she can be real fun to deal with.
All radios tuned by the best me.

Wow. I'm confused. They don't make them anymore, but when I talked to his wife today she acted like they never stopped making them?? And I found this post you made a while back about the Midnight Special 250:

PostPosted: Thursday, 14 February 2008, 18:48 PM Post subject: Reply with quote

Please don't buy it. When they first hit the market we bought a case to try them and they all came back with problems. It was cheaper for us to fix them ourselves than to pay the shipping to send them back.
The gentleman that said that they are made in Chi-town. Sir you are wrong. I can't give up industry secrets to tell you who and where but take my word for it they are not of the mid west.

I hope the manufacturer doesn't read this. But I wanted to save you some grief. They do have other products that do deserve the industry's respect though but just like the Ford Motor Co. we all have our Edsel's that we put on the market.

I'm so confused.............Not trying to start anything just want some clarification.

Maybe you confused the 500s with the 700s. I never heard of any problems with the MS 4 pill but the 700s had a single problem........if you drive them with a healthy low key big swing dual final export you'll burn up the 2 watt resistor from the pot to the input of the 1 pill section.

Yeah, that's why I listed what it liked above. It doesn't like but about but about 30ish watts of swing. That sd1146s driving the other 4 can take the abuse.

How does this sound?

Post by 10 Gauge » Friday, 14 November 2008, 7:14 AM

I just ordered one of these online last night from Xforce as it seems like a nice little box for the price.

I am currently using a Cobra 25 NightWatch and it's been a solid little radio hooked to the K40 I bought with it. My question is how well will the K40 hold up to this amp? I love the antenna and IIRC it will handle up to 500w. Xforce recommends an antenna capable of handling 2x the output of the amp which seems like a perfect match for me.

What kind of distance gains can be expected from a small amp and antenna setup such as mine? Thanks in advance for any replies!

Oh yeah, love the forum too. Very nice!

Distance is a hard factor to determine but it will increase your signal strength and audio. If your in Falls Church I should be able to pull you in here in Centreville/ Fairfax aka "Destroyer Territory" Listen for a fellow by the name of 678, I am either on 18, 20 or 6.

Thanks Pillpopper! I actually work in Manassas Park which is right down the road from Centreville... I hope to be getting on the road around 5 or 6 tonight and I will see if I can catch ya.

Do you think the K40 will work out OK with that amp? Thanks!
