PSV-300 and 102 inch whip question

Post by kidx » Saturday, 08 April 2017, 13:12 PM

I am wondering I bought the PSV-300 from pyramid, I am wondering why my radio dims still its 20 amps continues. I don't know much about this power supple but its a beast so far. I also bought a 102 inch whip and my needle pegs out with it also when i set my gain my needle dont move but gain goes loud weird I just bought this Uniden pc68LTD weird. I have lowered the antenna ran the antenna no spring no ground plane then with spring then both i have done it all. Also when going 18 feet my CB still shuts off when i have 20 amps is there a setting on my PSV-300 i am not seeing?

NO switch on the back.It is a regulator inside the power supply that lets the power supply work more efficiently let me investigate more on this mic gain thing. Does this radio have a modulation /power switch. it will let you see how much modulation you have or how much power you radio puts out

no i do not believe your problems are antenna related. I believe it something to do with the modulation circuit in your radio . Its like someone turned up the modulation to high or something is letting it peg out like that . Im 99 percent sure it in the radio. because of everything else you have done is good

even if you swr was through the roof you radio lights would not dim.and you modulation would be weak or none at all. I mean you can run the radio with no coax and the lights would not dim..it might pop a fuse or circuit but what yous is doing is a strange one

The lights dim in that radio because Uniden was still using wheat lamps for illumination, the regulator in the radio is weak so it will dim, the fix is to replace the lamps with LED's and get a beefier regulator for in the radio.
That looks like the least of your problems, from the sound of it the SWR on the antenna are sky rocketing, that is the reason the radio pegs the meter. Why are still playing with a makeshift antenna when your brothers setup worked so well. My suggestion is to get a good real base antenna and then you can experiment with the other things now that the weather is getting warmer.

What is the SWR? Need to know on channels 1, 20 and 40. Next, what are you using for a counterpoise (ground plane)?
If you don't want what works then I don't have a clue what to tell you.

From the readings (why leave out channel 20?) the antenna is to short. You need about guessing 3" more length.

You could try an old antenna trick, get a short piece of solid copper wire, strip the insulation, wrap it around the end of the antenna several wraps so it is nice and tight, stretch the rest of the length straight up from the end. Have at least 6" above the whip and measure the SWR, trim the copper wire or you can just fold it over tight to itself until the SWR is reasonable, measure the wire and that is how long the antenna will need to be made.
Another trick is to take a set of car battery jumper cables, they are usually 8 to 9 ft long and attach them to the ground side of the antenna mount, one to the left and the other to the right, doing this will increase the counterpoise the antenna needs to function properly.

You wrap the wire at the tip top of the antenna, you have to wrap it tight so it stays up there, might need a piece of tape to hold it up. Doing this increases the length of the antenna. I use copper wire, (any size but solid not stranded), because it's easy to trim.

and tell us what coax you have, brand and specs if known. it could be part of the problem. any kinked parts? pinched ? what is the length and what kind of end conectors are on it?
another trick would be to make a balun.
overall i think your ground and counterpoise is the problem.
as for the radio dimming, maybe you have a RX/TX switching backlight that is dead. or it could simply be a mic wiring condition.
your problem questions can lead to many solutions that can include wasted effort so please explain in detail things like, where did you get your radio, was it new, did anyone "work" on it? where did you get all the other components, what condition they're in, brand, or where you are getting your information from other than this site, such as,,, mmm, lets say for instance, the waitress at the diner or a ARRL book from the library.

The antenna still needs to be made longer, I would say a least an inch maybe 2. Have you tried anything I suggested in my post to get the SWR down? what is the total length of the antenna now and have you added any ground plane to it?

I took the ground plane, The other antenna i bought used it and all channels are quieter still high SWR. Now our only solution is to double check the coax and see it when shipping There was noting put in there. When screwing the coax to the stud its stiff and very tight. I also tried a spring its either 40 is hogh or they are all 2.0 with low watts out.

Okay, the video was a world of help. From what I saw you really don't have any kind of ground plane, that thing with the 6 radials is not a ground plane, they say it is suppose to stabilize the signal of the antenna, I say it does nothing but look funny. Good thing you removed it. It looks like the antenna is close to a metal gazebo or a frame of something, what you want to do is move the antenna to the corner of your porch, mount the bracket so it is flush with the top handrail of the porch. From the screws of the bracket run a 9ft (can be shorter but as long as possible) piece of wire toward the gazebo and the other back toward the house. I would check the SWR then and I'll bet it will go down considerably. You could run a 3rd wire from the bracket down the post to the ground and fasten it to a short pipe or rod in the ground. If you still need some added length to the antenna you can use that radial thing just remove those rods sticking out.
Your antenna is close to the ground so distance transmitting is going to be hampered but with my suggestions you should get a good SWR and with that the receive signal will also increase.

not really weird and the info you got from it is the same thing I've been telling you. His antenna is above the roof but you don't have that option I guess, so move it into a clearer area, the corner of he porch looked good to me. The wires he had mounted to the antenna bracket at the mast is what I have been saying about a ground plane, Try that.

You need to add a counterpose of some sort. It can be wire,or any kind of metal. You should also read up on antenna theory.

What do you mean? Back one of the mount screws out and put a 9ft piece of wire behind it, tighten the screw and run it along the handrail of the porch, one wire in one direction and a second the other handrail. Sounds easy to me.
